Molly, an A level student at Hugh Baird College in Liverpool, undertook a paid four-week internship with Yellow House, a charity devoted to the social and emotional well-being of young people, made possible thanks to the support of the Bupa Foundation.
During the four weeks, Molly has been involved with preparing the space for workshops, cleaning up afterwards and helping the young people who attend Yellow House with different activities, including art.
One of their main tasks was the collation and archiving of thousands of photos that were held on the computers and storing them onto a hard drive to free up space. This involved putting them in folders. Additionally, they have been involved with making a short film of a fundraising bike ride that one of the young people from Yellow House did, something that they had never done before, and in conducting research for the charity.
“Molly did a lot of hard work during their time with us and the task of collating and archiving the photos is something that has been needed to be done for a number of years”.
George McKane, Yellow House
The biggest challenge for Molly was being asked to take part in one of the workshops and to get up on stage with one of the other young people at the centre.
Molly admits that it was nerve-wracking but they did it and gained confidence from it. So much so that they were happy to deliver an end-of-internship presentation, something that they would not have done at the start of the internship.
Their time at Yellow House has improved their confidence, IT skills and improved how they feel about themselves. This experience has made them realise more as to who they are and they will continue to take on volunteering opportunities in the future.
Molly’s plan after sixth form is to study Maths at University and is aiming for Oxbridge. Post university they are considering investment banking as a future career.
