Matthew Bell from Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, North Shields, graduated from our programme in 2019. Matthew was mentored by Jack Brayford from Kier and enjoyed a 4 week paid internship at Manpower. Here, he shares how these experiences helped him develop the skills, confidence and experience needed to kick-start a rewarding and successful future.
Before joining the Career Ready programme I was unmotivated, with no direction. My mentor Jack was able to give great advice on the working world and useful information on what careers could be available to me, giving great insight into all the different pathways I could take.
My internship took place at Manpower in Newcastle, I helped source candidates in the engineering sector. My proudest moment was the first candidate I successfully placed into a job.
Through my internship, I gained experience working in a real organisation, which has really boosted my confidence and helped me become more ready for the working world.
During the masterclasses taught by Career Ready, I learnt a lot about being interviewed and what good technique looked like. This was probably the most important thing I learnt during the programme as I had no experience of interviews prior to this. I also gained a lot of valuable understanding of the professional space from workplace visits.
I am currently completing an apprenticeship with Manpower, a global company, and that is because of the Career Ready programme. Now I am much more confident and motivated about my future.
