Shamma Bamgboye from Harris Academy Greenwich in London enjoyed a four-week paid internship with the charity Career Ready. Here, she tells us what she learnt and how it opened her eyes to the world of work.
I was unsure but everyone was so welcoming
I was fortunate enough to complete an Internship with Career Ready having had no prior work experience in a corporate environment. I was unsure if I’d fit in with the team, but everyone was so welcoming and easy to work with.
If I were to describe my internship in one word it would be thrilling. I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in a promotional film for the charity and asked to present to the team about the masterclasses I had attended so far. My favourite part of the internship was getting to meet the Career Ready team and network at multiple events. These types of experiences took me out of my comfort zone and really helped build my confidence.
It was a privilege to host Shamma within our team. She was proactive from the very beginning and keen to get involved in various projects to expand her skillset. It was incredibly rewarding to support Shamma’s professional development and we saw her knowledge and confidence grow throughout her time with us.

A chance to come away from our comfort zone
I think internship opportunities like the one I had are really important for young people. It’s the chance to get out of the comfort of our well-known school environment and into the real-life working world. The fact that Career Ready is able to offer paid internships is amazing, it’s very difficult to find this type of opportunity on your own.
For those thinking of joining career ready I would tell them to grab the opportunity with both hands and run with it.
Get involved today and help more young people like Shamma kickstart their futures.
