Tom Smith, a Process Manager at Diageo, is Career Ready mentor to Brooke from Kirkcaldy. This is his story.
“Throughout my career, I’ve had people who’ve supported me, and developed me in different steps of my career,” says Tom.
“So I wanted to give other people the same opportunity I’ve had.”
Tom works at Diageo’s Cameronbridge site in Fife, where his Career Ready mentee Brooke joined the team for a four-week paid internship over the summer.
“It was a great experience working with Brooke and all of the mentees,” Tom said. “We visited lots of places and saw a lot of Diageo sites to show what’s involved in different roles in the organisation.
“We’ve given them experience of the training required for a role, as well as useful tips on things like how to develop interview skills, looking at their CV, and building confidence in what they have to offer as individuals.”
From nerves to confidence
“I’ve seen a massive development in Brooke, especially through the internship,” Tom adds.
“On the first day Brooke was fairly nervous about the situation – I think it’s natural when you start a job, and you’re trying to make a good impression.
“But by the end of it Brooke started to build confidence, and I can see some real knowledge of the job. Brooke is a very good listener, really takes in and understands what I’m talking about, and can relay that information back very effectively.
“So I’ve been really impressed in terms of development.”
My own development
“Personally, I’ve learned more about time management – it’s really important to make sure you’ve got the time to give this your all, because that’s how you’ll get the most out of it for you and the young person,” says Tom.
“I learned more about myself, and what I can do for someone else.
“If you’re in a position where you maybe haven’t managed people in the past, then it’s a good opportunity as well – it’s a good step towards that.
“It’s been very rewarding, and if you’re interested in mentoring, Career Ready is something I recommend exploring.”
