Finlay Stalker from Oldmachar Academy, our Student of the Year for Aberdeen, shares how his internship and mentor at VisitScotland helped him develop the skills, confidence and experience needed to kickstart a successful future.

Before I started the programme I wasn’t as confident as I am now and I was pretty anxious about what my future held for me after school. Thanks to Career Ready, I’m now much more self-confident and I feel positive about my future.

I received professional mentoring from Neil who works at VisitScotland and then enjoyed a four-week paid internship at his workplace. Being able to experience a paid internship was great as it transformed my confidence and helped me to develop new skills. I think that the improvements in my confidence were further helped by how nice my colleagues were, they really helped to bring me out of my shell.

I’d just like to say thank you Neil and everyone at VisitScotland for all their support – starting the Career Ready programme was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

The best part of my internship was writing articles for the Daily Mail, not only did I really enjoy doing this, but they were also published which felt great.  Because of how much I enjoyed my time working on the marketing side of things during my internship, my plan for the future is to now study Management and Marketing at university as this is where my passion lies.
