Matt Young, of Inverkeithing High School, Fife, joined the Career Ready programme in 2017. While on the programme he enjoyed a paid internship with Diageo. Here, he explains how opportunities from the Career Ready programme and the guidance of his mentor changed his life.
The Career Ready masterclasses took me into different workplaces and highlighted different workplace skills, like what I would need to be successful in an interview and also how to feel more confident meeting new people. These are the kinds of important life lessons that we don’t get to learn at school and some of the most important things I learnt during the programme.
The internship was magical and opened up doors I never thought I’d be able to access.
Guided by my mentor, Alistair, the confidence I gained from my internship brought out a new me. I felt so encouraged and supported throughout. Alastair was fantastic. He’s been incredibly influential and I’m happy to call him a friend. He has supported me through the whole programme, especially when I’ve found things difficult.
The Career Ready programme has changed my life. It’s put me in touch with my amazing mentor and introduced me to a place of work that I’m glad to say I’m now a part of. I’m so proud that I’ve been able to secure a three-year apprenticeship with Diageo, the place where I did my internship.
