Liam Stritch from St Augustine’s RC High School, our Student of the Year for Edinburgh & Midlothian, enjoyed an internship at Edinburgh University through Career Ready. Here, he shares how the experience has helped him prepare for the world of work.

Before I started the Career Ready programme I was pretty shy and I didn’t have much confidence in myself or in my future. The fact that I didn’t have any professional experience, which employers are always looking for, was also making me nervous about my future. Mrs Graham, one of my teachers, really pushed me to get involved with Career Ready and make the most of the opportunities they’d be able to provide me.

As part of the programme, I received professional mentoring from Stephen who works at Edinburgh University. Being able to meet up with him on a monthly basis to chat about my career dreams was incredibly useful and helped me develop my knowledge so much. In our meetings, he would advise me on what I would need to do to get to where I want to go, and he helped me develop the workplace skills I will need along the way.

As part of the programme I also received a four-week paid internship at Edinburgh University, where Stephen works. This gave me the chance to put the skills I’d learnt into action, as well as get a first-hand glimpse into what it’s like to work in a professional environment.

My internship has transformed my confidence and I feel inspired about the future.

I’d just like to say thank you to Stephen for pushing me to do my best and always encouraging me to dive into the deep-end. He really has helped me to prepare for the future. Looking ahead, my aim is to continue working with Stephen and learning from him, and then to possibly go to college to study music as this is a real passion of mine.
