Blackpool Sixth Form student Logan’s paid internship at Victrex, where his mentor Hugh also works, was so successful they asked him to stay a few more weeks. This is his story.
“It’s quite scary when you’re younger, not having had a proper job and having to grow up to enter one,” says Logan Neo Wilding, from St Annes. “I joined Career Ready wanting to get an understanding of the world of work. I would say at that point, I was quite anxious about life.”
Logan’s mentor Hugh Birkmyre is a Research and Development Scientist at Victrex. Their monthly catch-ups helped Logan start to feel more confident.
“There’s so many benefits to having a mentor,” Logan says. “He’s given me great advice on so much, such as my college work, LinkedIn and to always have a plan. He is rather experienced (no offence!) and knows his way about the world.
“He helped me to learn the inner workings of Victrex before doing my internship.”
It was great to have my advice taken on board
“I really enjoyed my internship with the Learning and Inclusion department at Victrex,” says Logan.
“I learned a lot about office work, professionalism, and teamwork. I learnt an office doesn’t have to be always boring. My favourite moments were group calls with my colleagues to discuss the week – they were always a good laugh.
“I helped develop courses, create websites and databases, and contributed to launching a new learning platform. It was great to see it all come together, and it was also good to have my advice taken on board.”
At the end of his Career Ready internship, the team asked Logan to stay on for an additional three weeks – describing him as a “huge asset” to the team.
“I think I succeeded so well with my internship because I really enjoyed it, and wanted to do it,” says Logan. “I hope to go back for a summer job, but we’ll see!
“Career Ready has definitely helped by giving my confidence a boost. I am a whole lot more confident about how the world of work functions – and with myself and my abilities.”
