Millie, a student at Lochside Academy, completed a four-week paid internship with H&P in Aberdeen, where her mentor Nicola works. This is Millie’s story.
“Before the Career Ready programme, I was motivated and willing to work hard, but I didn’t yet have much understanding of the world of work – or the opportunities available to me,” says Millie.
“I had skills and interests, but I wasn’t sure how to connect them to a future career. The programme helped me bridge that gap, by giving me real insight and experience.
“Now, I’m more confident, independent, and prepared for the world of work. I have a clearer idea of how my skills can be applied in different settings, and I feel better equipped to take on challenges. I’ve grown both personally and professionally, and I feel ready to take the next steps towards my future.”
An internship in industry
Millie’s internship saw her join the team at H&P – an international organisation which operates in the oil and gas industry.
“I mainly worked in the communications department, where I supported projects and gained a better understanding of how professional workplaces operate,” she says. “I learned to be more confident in my work and trust my abilities when completing tasks.
“It allowed me to use and develop my writing skills, something I already enjoy.
“My favourite moment was delivering my final presentation at the end of the internship. It was something I had been nervous about, but it pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and gave me a real sense of achievement. That showed me that I can overcome challenges and perform well under pressure.”
Sharing my goals for the future
Millie’s mentor is Nicola Davidson, Head of SAP at H&P.
“Nicola helped me build confidence and encouraged me to take on challenges I might have avoided,” Millie says. “It was reassuring to have someone I could ask questions and talk to openly about my goals and future plans.
“She showed me how my skills, especially in writing and communication, could be applied in professional settings I hadn’t considered before. Her guidance has helped me see new possibilities and given me the confidence to pursue opportunities that align with my interests.”
Now, Millie is beginning the process of applying to University to study MA English with Creative Writing, and hopes to do a postgraduate in communications.
“My experience with Career Ready has taught me to follow my dreams and do what I love, which is exactly what I’m away to do.”
