Maddie from Harris Garrard Academy in London completed a four-week internship at the Infrastructure Industry Foundation (IIF). Watch the video to hear about her experience.
Maddie joined 40 other young people from across London for an internship with the IIF, learning all about the infrastructure industry.
“My favourite moments were probably the site visits,” she says. “We went to Stagecoach, which was really interesting. When you get on the bus, you don’t really think about it, that there’s so much power behind it.”
Maddie’s mentor Donald works at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP – a great connection for an aspiring barrister. “We’ve had so many insightful conversations about my career path, and he’s helped me write things like my personal statement,” she says.

Video transcript:
We have been learning from speakers who work here at M&G, and at the companies that the IIF support.
That is ranging from asset management to investor relations. The actual investment team, it’s all been different.
My favorite moments are probably the site visits. We went to Stagecoach, which was really interesting, and it was a really cool thing to experience because you don’t really think about it when you get on the bus that there’s so much power behind it. And the same, when we went to Gatwick, there’s so much that goes on behind the scenes that you just don’t think about when you go on holiday.
I’ve always been really set on going to university and getting my law degree and becoming a barrister, but there’s so many people here that got into the same role in so many different ways.
So I think the one thing I would take away from is that if university doesn’t go to plan, or if I just decide I don’t want to go that it’s not the end of the world and I can still get the job I want.
The mentor that I was assigned is a lawyer, which is really helpful to me. And we’ve had so many conversations about my career path, and he’s helped me write things like my personal statement. I think it really just gives you first hand experience.
I think you can’t get this any other way. You can learn about it and you can talk about it, and people can tell you how to act and what it’s going to be like, but actually being here is such a different experience.
And the past four weeks have been so different to what it’s been like in, even just in sixth form.
That it’s just been a really cool opportunity.
