James and Matt from Glasgow completed paid internships with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, where both of their mentors work. Watch the video to hear about their experiences.

For interns at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the internship presentation is a little different. Not only do they talk about their experience during the four-week paid internship – they also demonstrate the skills they’ve built.

“We did a demonstration, a snatch rescue and hose drill,” Matt explains. “Two people went in and got a casualty out of a building on fire. We managed to put out the fire, make sure everything was set up in a timely fashion.

“I love the practical stuff, how I’m able to go out and do these things that I wouldn’t normally be able to do.”

“I’ve always been interested in the fire service,” James adds. “It’s been a dream of mine. It’s what I want to do when I’m older.”

Video transcript:

Matt: I’ve spent the last four weeks in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

Today, we did a demonstration we did a snatch rescue and hose drill two people went in and got a casualty out of a building on fire. We managed to put out the fire, make sure everything was set up in a timely fashion.

James: So I was a BA Commander And what we do is we go in and we extract the person or people that’s in the vicinity of where the fire is.

Matt: I love the practical stuff. I love how involved all the mentors are, how I’m able to go out and do these things that I wouldn’t normally be able to do.

James: We’ve done a lot of theory work also over the last few weeks.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that the health and safety plays a big, pivotal aspect within the fire service, and we always make sure that we will be safe when we go into one of these buildings

Matt: I’ve learned a lot of teamwork skills, a lot of communication and confidence skills the ins and outs of all the different jobs within the service, and it’s really within the service, and it’s really opened a lot of doors for me.

James: I really like the camaraderie, feeling like a part of a family because it really does feel like that. It’s cheesy and it’s corny, but it’s true.

Matt: I wasn’t sure coming in, but now I’ve got my mind set on it. I’m going to keep in touch my mentor and try to have opportunities volunteering at stations, and just get through school get into college and enroll as soon as I can.

James: I’ve always been interested in the fire service, it’s been a dream of mine. It’s what I want to do when I’m older.

Matt: No matter what, you’re going to gain something, whether that’s a skill, even in a profession that you might not take as a career, you’ll learn so much and it’ll open some door for you.

James: Do it 100% 200%, even 300% I’d say I would guarantee you you’ll have an amazing time.
