Claire Atkins from Sintons LLP is our 2018 Citi Bank Volunteer of the Year for the North East. Here, she shares her experience of being a Career Ready volunteer and the difference she makes to the lives of young people.

I have worked with Career Ready for a few years now and I’ve always been impressed with the difference it makes to the lives of young people. I first heard about Career Ready when the regional manager for the area approached my employer about getting involved. The opportunity to help young people increase their employability knowledge and skills really appealed to me, so I decided to get involved as a volunteer.

As part of my volunteering, I’ve presented masterclasses on the skills young people need to develop for career success, as well as the different pathways there are available to him. I just hope that it’s increased their awareness, as well as seeing that there are different routes and motivations to support career development and that there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

The Think Law initiative, which I’m proud to support, has also rejuvenated my enthusiasm as it provides a very structured and supportive way of helping young people gain an understanding of what a law career entails and the steps they’ll need to take on this career journey.

Volunteering with Career Ready has benefitted me also. It’s given me the opportunity to work with great new people and I thoroughly enjoy working with, and learning from, the students too.

If you’re looking for a rewarding volunteering experience which makes a real difference, then my advice is to go for Career Ready! It’s all very organised and they give you the tools for your mentoring or masterclasses so very little planning time is required.
