Matt Cordas, Senior Marketing Manager at St. James’s Place in London graduated the Career Ready programme 10 years ago, and is in his fifth year of being a mentor. Hear how Career Ready continues to impact him as a professional and person.

Matt became a Career Ready volunteer after receiving support himself on the programme when he was at sixth form.

“I became a Career Ready volunteer, as I, too, was supported by someone in my early working years. The programme supported me to develop my knowledge of how to be in the workplace, alongside the guidance of a supporting mentor and work placement. Career Ready helped me immensely, and so it’s important to me that I give back.”

He’s mentored four students so far and recognises that he benefits from the experience just as much as they do.

“It’s important to say that it’s a two-way relationship. Volunteering helps me to understand what young people are going through, keeps me and my understanding relevant, and develops my own soft skills like presentation skills.”

He also thinks being able to work with young people benefits all professionals when it comes to understanding students’ perspectives and the environment they’re living in.

“It’s easy to ‘fall out of the loop’ with what young people are going through. For example, in the last two to three years alone, not many students have completed exams in person – which impacts soft skills when looking to hire young talent.”

Reflecting on his time as a volunteer, he shares what’s been the most rewarding moment for him.

“A definite highlight for me has been seeing those that I’ve supported flourish. Many of the students I’ve mentored have gone on to begin fantastic professional careers in the sector of their choosing. Everyone has their own journey, and hopefully, I’ve helped them in theirs.”

Matt also had the chance to share his career journey with other young people at his old college, which was another Career Ready highlight for him.

“I loved going back to my college and presenting to the students. I shared my own career journey to date, takeaway learnings, and top tips. It felt a bit ground-hog day going back (the buildings were still very much the same!) – but it was awesome to see the lecturers again. It was very much going full circle for me.”

The importance of mentoring

Matt believes mentoring is a vital thing for young people to access because of the opportunity it gives them to reach their full potential.

“Mentors are important as they provide guidance. You can ask (what you think is) a silly question in a safe environment. Even the most senior people in business have mentors, so they keep their eye on the game, glean perspectives, and hear of others’ experiences that could support their next steps.”

And for those who are wondering whether they want to volunteer with young people or not, Matt has this message for you.

“If you’re considering whether to volunteer or not – give it a go. I can say that it’s helped me personally and professionally to develop in a short space of time. What you pick up from the students is amazing – even if it is the latest words and vocabulary!!”
