Effie Sharpe, a Senior Recruitment Consultant for Primary Education at Randstad Education, is a Carer Ready mentor and winner of the Standard Life Mentor of the Year Award 2017 for the North West. Here, she shares her experience of mentoring Mia and how she has been able to give her the skills, confidence and experience to kick-start a successful future.

In my current role, I support Primary Schools based in Blackpool & across the Fylde Coast. I was approached to join the Local Advisory Board for Career Ready and as I live and work in Blackpool I believed this was a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in my local community.

My time at College was an important time in my life so the idea of mentoring a student during this time was exciting. The team at Career Ready and Blackpool Sixth Form made this an easy decision to make too.

Being a mentor is such a great experience and a win-win for everyone involved.

It really connects the students with local businesses and gives them the opportunity to learn, develop, network and be successful. Mia, my mentee, has always been proactive, energised and motivated to take advantage of every opportunity available to her.

For businesses, it is a fantastic way to network with the local area and explore new opportunities. It is also a fantastic way to keep your own working approach current by keeping up to date with the next generation of employees. I feel that while I have worked with Mia and seen her develop and shape her future, I too have learnt and developed so much too.

If you want an opportunity to support a young adult during a valuable time in their life while learning new skills by developing your own working life then Career Ready is an ideal organisation to be a part of. I have now gone into my second year of mentoring and I aim to continue supporting Career Ready.
