Ilhan Mohamed from London Academy enjoyed a four-week paid internship at Sparta Global, a technology services company. Here, she explains how it boosted her confidence and gave her the workplace skills and knowledge to kickstart a rewarding future that she is excited about.
Developing my workplace skills
Before my internship I was very quiet with little confidence. I hadn’t had any previous work experience so was unsure of what to expect from the workplace.
During my time at Sparta Global I was managed by Gaia and Annabelle within the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team, and they really helped me develop my confidence and workplace skills. I was able to practise networking by interacting with everyone in the office and learnt how to communicate professionally in a workplace setting. Through the projects I was able to work on, I developed my problem-solving and presentation skills.
I jumped at the chance to speak to the Head of Accounting and Finance because I knew I wanted to study accountancy in the future. The conversation really opened my eyes to the potential of the role, past the stereotype of it being boring, and I felt reassured that I was making the right decision for my future.
It was great to mentor Ilhan during her internship at Sparta Global. During the four weeks she spent with us, she supported some of our high-profile ED&I company initiatives and quickly gained confidence in the role.
Ilhan pushed herself out of her comfort zone, achieved some tremendous progress and acquired both hard and soft skills that visibly improved her confidence. It was a pleasure to work with a Career Ready young person and we look forward to helping more talented individuals like Ilhan to achieve their full potential in the future.

I was so proud of myself when I realised just how far my confidence had come by the end of the four weeks – I felt like I’d become a better version of myself.
Motivated for the future
I learnt a lot of new skills during my time at Sparta Global and had experiences that will benefit me in the real world. This experience has helped shape me into a more well-rounded individual and a better version of myself. I now feel really excited and motivated for what the future has to offer.
These types of internship opportunities are so important and I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had. Without hesitation I would encourage any young person to join the Career Ready programme.
