Sadie Hass from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College in Bristol completed a four-week paid internship at Marsh, an insurance broker. Here, she tells us how the internship opened her eyes to the world of work and gave her the confidence to kick start a rewarding future.

I had no idea what to expect

I was pretty nervous about my internship, no one in my life has a corporate job so I had no idea what to expect. Despite these worries, I was also really excited.

I spent most of my time shadowing different departments within the organisation and finding out what everyone does. I really enjoyed shadowing the New Business and Claims team specifically as I found their jobs really interesting. Getting to know everyone in the office was one of the best parts of my internship.

A real-life insight

My proudest moment was completing the final presentation, I put everything I’d learnt together and was able to showcase my time at Marsh. It felt like a real achievement to present to people in a professional environment.

When I first met Sadie, she was quite nervous, I can only imagine how she felt starting her internship, not knowing anyone. Fast forward to her final presentation and she was amazing! The Sadie we saw that day was inspirational, funny and confident. If she is ever looking for a job in the future – she knows where we are!

This internship has allowed me to get a real-life insight into the world of work. I’ve definitely realised that corporate jobs aren’t boring and going into the world of work isn’t something to dread! I feel much more confident about the prospect of applying for a job in the future and definitely won’t be so intimidated by the process.

I feel far less intimidated

I think internships like the one I had are a great chance for young people to gain an insight into the world of work, as well as being great additions to your CV or application, young people need the experience to decide what they don’t want to do as much as what they do want to do.

This opportunity has definitely helped me feel far less intimidated by the corporate workplace and shown me that it’s not as out of my reach as I had always assumed it was.

Get involved today and help more young people like Sadie kickstart their futures.
