Kai Parry, from London South East Colleges in Bromley, joined the Career Ready programme in 2018 where he enjoyed a successful year long mentoring partnership and four week paid internship at Wates Construction Company. Now pursuing a career in construction, Kai explains how the Career Ready programme has helped him develop the skills, experience and confidence needed to kick-start his future.

My mentor Ruby was really supportive throughout my year on the Career Ready programme, she gave me plenty of advice and arranged several relevant workplace visits. Ruby even attended my end of internship presentation which I really appreciated. I’d like to thank Ruby for the skills that she taught me during our time together, they have proven invaluable. If it wasn’t for her advice and experience, I wouldn’t have been exposed to the opportunities within construction and be on the career path I am now – I feel I might have made the wrong decision about my future.

Having worked closely with Kai over the 12 months, I’m so proud that the time we spent together has inspired his career choices. To celebrate his achievements I arranged for Kai to walk around one of our bigger sites at Borough Yards Project, he visualised himself in the future as a Wates manager – how fantastic!   – Ruby El-Kanzi, Kai’s mentor at Wates.

Before my internship at Wates I had no idea what I wanted to do after college and knew very little about the construction industry. During the internship I got to work with lots of different team members in different roles, some I’d heard of, some I hadn’t. The Career Ready internship at Wates changed my mind-set completely. Getting to know all of the different roles really informed my decision when it came to applying for a university course. I’ve gone from inexperienced and unmotivated to informed and driven to take my next steps.

Career Ready has helped me in so many ways. The CV and LinkedIn profile that I created at the beginning helped me get the job I am in now. I have developed all sorts of skills like teamwork, organisation and public speaking. I can now say that I am more confident and have a career that I am focused on. I have just been accepted onto a university course and I don’t think this would have been achievable without the opportunities Career Ready gave me.
