Abbie Welsh from Meldrum Academy, our 2019 Standard Life Aberdeen Student of the Year for Aberdeenshire, enjoyed a paid internship and mentoring at Bon Accord Care. Here, she shares how the experience has given her the skills, confidence and opportunity to kickstart a rewarding future.

Before Career Ready I was anxious and quiet around new people, as well as unorganised, I’m now much more confident and better at planning my work and life.

The support of Helen – my mentor – has been life-changing. She has helped me to gain more confidence and feel sure of myself. She has encouraged to talk to more people and not to be afraid of meeting new people. She’s also pushed me to always do my best and aim high.

I would like to say thank you to Helen for believing in me and supporting me through every step of my internship.

My internship at Bon Accord Care, an adult social care provider, has genuinely been one of the best things I’ve ever done. It made me feel more confident about myself and it gave me the opportunity to do things I never thought I could do, such as doing a Q&A in front of hundreds of people!

During my time at Bon Accord Care, I enjoyed spending time with people in the home and putting my heart and soul in the newsletter I created for them and their families.

My plan for the future is to either work in journalism or in the media – Career Ready has given me the confidence to be able to talk to and question people which will help me achieve this dream.
