Lottie Costain from Blackpool Sixth Form College completed a four-week Internship at Bupa with the Marketing Team. Here, she explains how the experience helped give her the skills, confidence and motivation to kickstart a rewarding future.

I lacked direction and motivation

When it came to my future after college, I used to be unsure of what I wanted to do. After Covid and the disruption it had on my education, I lacked direction and motivation. I struggled to push myself out of my comfort zone and I had no idea how to identify my skill set, let alone utilise it.

During my internship at Bupa I was able to explore my strengths and weaknesses. I got involved with as much as possible, interacted with team members and welcomed constructive feedback. I learnt that the type of skills and knowledge I was developing were transferable and would be beneficial in any kind of workplace which I found really useful.

A transformational four weeks

The four weeks I spent at Bupa were transformational and have helped me feel positive about my future. The best part was meeting the amazing people and hearing about their own career journeys. I learnt that I do not have to follow the traditional route of university after college and have gained knowledge, skills and confidence which have given me a newfound drive to have a successful career.

It was a pleasure hosting Lottie during her internship, she’s had such an impact on the team! I’ve really enjoyed helping her develop her workplace skills and I know that she has a bright future. The experience has made me reflect on how important it is to offer workplace opportunities like this to young people and makes me proud to work at Bupa where we are serious about championing young talent.

I regained my motivation

Going through the mandatory education system felt draining, especially after it had been affected by the pandemic, but this internship helped me regain my motivation. Having an insight into what my future could look like one day has inspired me to set goals and encouraged me to work hard.

Internship opportunities like this are invaluable, they allow young people to take responsibility for their future and give them the opportunity to experience life outside of education.
