Candace, from Lochend Community High School, Rayan from St Mungo’s Academy, and Muhammad from Bellahouston Academy completed paid internships at Morgan Stanley in Glasgow, where their mentors also work. Hear about their experience.

Each of the students took new skills and insights from their internships.

“We got to do so much, and learn so much,” says Rayan.

“Everyone has been really nice and helpful,” adds Candace. “You’re obviously not going to know everything about finance going in – I’ve learned how to ask questions when I need help.”

“It unlocked a lot of stuff inside me that I didn’t know I had, like inner confidence,” says Muhammad.

It unlocked a lot of stuff inside me that I didn’t know I had, like inner confidence, and a lot of icebreaking that I did as well. I learned a lot of communication skills.

I’m really bad at asking people questions when I need help. So I’ve learned how to do that more. You’re obviously not going to know everything about finance if that’s what you’re doing. And everyone’s been really nice and helpful.

I worked in the technologies department, the internal audit department, and the CS/GC department. We got to tear apart monitors, and put them into a different laptop and that was really cool as we didn’t break anything. Honorable mention would be multimedia because I really love camera editing and everything like that, it’s really cool.

My manager has explained all the different roles in my work, and gave me a few Excel tasks to do. We have these mail groups with all the people so they can get all the emails that they need to get. I had to make sure everyone was on it so they can do the test.

I met my mentor before the summer internship, she gave me some advice and some insight on how the office works. She gave me a building tour. And in general she was just telling me that what I was expecting wasn’t going to be the actual reality of the truth about office life.

He would tell me everyday stuff he would do at Morgan Stanley, and we actually done some fun activities like playing table tennis, that was really fun – he’s better than me, though, so.

I’ve just been keeping in touch with her. And she’s been helping me like when I’ve been struggling with questions.

Everyone’s really kind to you. Very talkative. Well I’ve only been here three or four weeks, and they’re really, really good people that I’d probably talk to in years to come as well.

It’s been overwhelming but, I loved it here. We got to do so much, we got to learn so much – and I want to work here.
