Career Ready students learned from communications experts and developed their financial literacy skills during a workplace visit with our partner the Financial Times.
The visit to the Financial Times offices in London was packed with talks and interactive sessions for the students, from Capital City College.
Seasoned broadcaster, Lawrence Lee, and Debby Newman, from debate and oracy organisation Noisy Classroom led the students through a session on oracy skills. As well as sharing insights from their own experience, they used practical exercises to explore how young people can talk about their own strengths and skills with confidence.
The group had an opportunity to try out their interview skills with Lawrence, practicing questions and discussing how they can best present themselves to an interviewer.
“It helped me build my confidence, and made me realise my strengths. I used to not be comfortable in interviews and was nervous about doing it – but this session helped.”
“I found the mock interview session useful as it helped me see how others see me, and what qualities I have.”
“Great experience. It’s helped me a lot with interviews. Less stuttering, more confidence – I felt more proud of myself.”
Students also had a financial literacy workshop delivered by Flic, learning about budgeting, income tax and reading a payslip – vital insights as they continue through their studies and start their careers.
They also heard about the importance of financial planning, to help ensure financial security into the future.
“I’ve learned to be proud of my accomplishments and my achievements, not to feel embarrased or like I’m coming across as arrogant. It was great fun, and also very insightful.”
“The visit helped me sell myself in the best way I can. This place is amazing!”
