Michael Chapman was studying B Tech Level 3 in Electrical Engineering at NETA, part of Stockton Riverside College when he decided to attend a Logistic Workshop to learn about career opportunities in this sector.

Michael joined the Career Ready programme in logistics and when it came to the four-week paid internship he was interviewed for a placement at PD Ports Warehouse Operations in Billingham.

Although Michael admits he was rather shy and nervous at the interview, Chris Leonard, Contract Manager at the Billingham site, identified the potential in Michael and offered him the internship.

Michael grasped the opportunity and soon gained confidence and the skills necessary for a high profile warehousing operation.

Michael was working on the contract for Taylors of Harrogate, best known for their award-winning ‘Yorkshire Tea’.

Chris was so impressed with Michael’s enthusiasm and conscientiousness that at the end of the four-week placement he offered him a Warehouse Operative Apprenticeship.

Consequently, Michael has joined PD Ports and gained both Counterbalance and Pivot Fork Lift Truck Licences along with a knowledge and understanding of the Red Prairie Warehouse Management System.

His relationship with Stockton Riverside College has continued as they are the Training Service Provider for the ‘off the job’ training for Warehouse Apprentice and regularly visit him to monitor his progress.

Michael is due to complete his Apprenticeship in early 2019 and will become a fully skilled and competent Warehouse Operative with PD Ports.
