Frederick, a student at Harlaw Academy in Aberdeen, completed his paid internship at Well-Safe Solutions, where his mentor Olakunle works. This is his story.
“Although I was hardworking and eager to learn before the Career Ready programme, I lacked confidence and was quite shy in professional settings,” says Frederick.
“I didn’t always feel comfortable speaking to new people, asking questions and stepping out of my comfort zone – because I had no experience in the workplace.
“Now, I’d describe myself as more confident and open-minded.
“I’ve developed stronger communication skillls, became more comfortable asking for help and gained a much better understanding of how the workplace operates.”
Real tasks, real experience
Frederick describes his internship at Well-Safe Solutions as a “really valuable experience.”
“Being trusted with real tasks made me feel more capable and showed me the importance of contributing positively in a work environment.
“It’s given me a clearer understanding of the working world and the type of career I would like to pursue, and helped me see how important teamwork, communication, and problem-solving are in this industry.
“The experience also gave me valuable insight into engineering and operations, which has encouraged me to keep working towards a future career in that area.”
Visiting a rig also gave Frederick a chance to see the work environment up close.
“It was so interesting, as it gave me the opportunity to learn more about how different parts of industry operate in practice. It helped me connect what I learn in school to real careers.”
Support from a mentor
Frederick’s mentor, Olakunle Thanni, is a Well Engineer. With him, Frederick was able to talk through his hopes to go to university, and work towards a career in mechanical engineering.
“It was helpful to speak to someone with experience who could give advice, share knowledge, and encourage me to keep pushing myself,” he says. “Having a mentor also helped me build confidence and feel more prepared for future opportunities.
“Olakunle helped me think more seriously about my goals and what I want to achieve. Through his advice and encouragement, I gained a better understanding of the importance of confidence, communication, and taking opportunities.
“This has motivated me to keep working towards a future career in engineering and to make the most of every opportunity available to me.”
