Westminster Kingsway College student, Ariglesida, completed her paid internship at Marsh McLennan – and her mentor Sandy, a Barrister, helped her explore a potential future in law. This is her story.
During her Career Ready internship, Ariglesida enjoyed taking on real responsibilities and tasks.
“My experience at Marsh McLennan was amazing,” she says. “I was allowed to direct meetings on my own – I had responsibility for something big. I liked being given the chance to do my own work, not just sit and watch. I got real experience of what I’d do, if I worked in the insurance sector.
“I liked the environment and how everyone worked together. I was able to network and get to know people in the industry. I’ve become more confident, and it’s helped me use my skills to show everyone what I’m capable of.”
Having a mentor is amazing
Ariglesida’s mentor, Sandy Phipps, is a Barrister at One Essex Court. Working with him through the Career Ready programme has helped set her sights on a future career path.
“Having a mentor is amazing,” she says. “Because of the experience they have, you know their advice is valuable. It gives you the courage to step forward.
“Having Sandy as a mentor was important to me, as I got to see how life as a barrister is. It’s helped me to know 100% that I want to go into law in future – and understand the steps required to get into criminal law.”
Future plans
“I’m currently studying for my A Levels,” says Ariglesida. “My plan is to study criminology at university, then hopefully find a job in the sector.
“Before Career Ready, I was someone who wouldn’t step out of my comfort zone and wasn’t so confident.
“Now, through my workplace visits, masterclasses and internship, I’m more confident in speaking to people. I’ve learned new things and made major self-improvements.
“It’s a once in a life-time experience.”
