Abdurrakhman Sharofiddinov is a student at Reach Academy Feltham, London. His paid internship and mentor at bp gave him the opportunity to learn about how a global company operates – and explore the world of sustainability.
“Before Career Ready, I was unsure of what I wanted to do as my career, says Abdurrakhman. “Now I feel fully armed with knowledge and skills for my future.”
Abdurrakhman completed a four-week paid internship with bp over summer 2024. “It was a great experience. Over the course of my internship, I learnt how a global company operates and benefits others though their special programmes.”
During his internship, Abdurrakhman looked into the environmental impact of trying to achieve net zero – researching what’s possible, and what resources go into producing and installing equipment like wind turbines. He presented his findings during his end-of-internship presentation.
“I have seen how simple things can have major impacts,” he says. “For example, decreasing the overall carbon output of a specific platform can do a lot on a bigger scale.
“bp has a very friendly atmosphere, everyone operates as a whole, helping one another.
“The internship has helped me to finally choose what suits me the best for the future.”
A supportive mentor
Through Career Ready, Abdurrakhman was paired with mentor Charlie, who works at bp. His support has had an impact, both during the internship and beyond.
“There were lots of benefits to having a mentor,” says Abdurrakhman. “It’s someone you can rely on and learn from.
“My mentor showed me that if you don’t understand something, you should reach out for help. He’s also helped me to improve some of my people skills.”
Abdurrakhman also found the Career Ready masterclasses useful in building his skills. “I learned that it’s not all about your grades – you as an individual matter, as well. It’s helped me to identify skills I need to work on for the workplace.
“Career Ready is a great opportunity which can help you to really express your skills and find something which you love doing,” he says.
