Adam Hickey from Pinnacle Conservation Ltd in York provided a two-week paid internship to Evelyn Armas from Fulford school. Here, Adam tells us about his experience and explains why he felt it important to #InvestInYoungTalent and host an internship.
An opportunity to attract young talent
I wanted to host an internship with Career Ready because I’m keen to promote and attract young people into the construction industry, particularly the conservation sector. It is widely accepted that those currently employed in the heritage sector are an aged workforce and it is vital that the industry works hard to attract young people so that key skills can be harnessed for the future. This internship has provided an opportunity for us to showcase what the conservation sector can offer prospective talent.
Prior to the internship, we had a face-to-face meeting with Evelyn and her tutor to discuss what the internship would entail. Following this we set up a training timetable for the internship with daily learning objectives and a final presentation. The timetable involved a series of site visits, meetings and office-based assignments. Evelyn tackled each of the activities with enthusiasm and good humour. Everyone enjoyed her company.
Re-learning the fundamentals of what we do as a business
Evelyn’s final presentation was a great way to reflect on what she had learnt and how she felt her time with us had gone. Evelyn exceeded my expectations when it came to her awareness of the business and sector.
Before my internship at Pinnacle Conservation I didn’t realise how many career pathways there were within engineering and construction – there are so many jobs that require lots of different skills. This experience has helped me identify jobs out there that I would definitely enjoy.

As the owner of the business, I rarely get the opportunity to spend good quality time with people entering the profession. This internship has been a great opportunity to re-learn the fundamentals of what we do as a business and allowed me time to reflect on the impact we have on the industry and the duty we have to impart our knowledge onto young people.
A rewarding experience for all involved
This type of practical experience is invaluable for young people. Construction and, particularly conservation, is a very people-focused industry and requires the development of soft skills. It’s also a chance to learn about the expectations of the workplace: the importance of punctuality, behaving in a professional manner and being well presented.
To any small or medium business thinking of hiring an intern I’d say go for it – be open and broad minded, it will be a rewarding experience for all involved.
Get involved today and help more young people kickstart their futures.
