Career Ready and Totaljobs are delighted to have worked in partnership to research how young people, especially those who face socio-economic barriers, feel about the future of work and the barriers preventing them from kickstarting their careers.
This report highlights the following challenges facing young people aged 16-18 (based on a UK-wide sample of 1,000) when it comes to the future of work, as well as the challenges facing employers when it comes to attracting and retaining young talent.
Based on this research, the lived experience of young people, and Career Ready’s 20 years of experience of working with organisations, this report offers a range of approaches on how we can collectively work to unlock young talent.
Key findings
The findings of this research are a stark reminder of the challenges young people face. It is imperative that we invest in young, diverse talent and help ensure that they have the skills and opportunity to thrive in their journey from education into employment.

It’s clear that businesses must diversify just how they attract entry level talent – be that through offering more apprenticeships, paid work experience placements, or school leaver schemes. The research shows that the interest is there, but more work needs to be done to not only accelerate this but advertise and attract talent to these schemes.
