As one of our longest serving volunteers, Linda Bonner from the National Trust has mentored students from Bexhill College for nearly a decade. Since 2010, Linda has acted as Chair of the Local Advisory Board while mentoring no fewer than 12 students, helping them develop the skills, confidence and experience needed to kick-start a rewarding future. Here, she shares her volunteering experience.

Working for the National Trust, I know how important volunteering is. Without the support of those amazing people giving up their time, along with all the brilliant skills they bring with them, the National Trust would never be able to achieve what it does.

When I started to volunteer for Career Ready I was at a point where I felt I wanted to help others with their future careers. Over the years I had a number of mentors who had helped me and their guidance made a real difference in me developing a career both initially as a business leader and then as an HR professional.

What I didn’t initially realise from mentoring with Career Ready would be the benefit that I would get back from working with some really inspiring students.

Thank you, Linda, for all of your help and inspiration as my Career Ready mentor – you are incredible! I am truly grateful that you encouraged me to believe in myself and my abilities and without your guidance I would not have had the confidence to get to where I am today – I really appreciate all of your insight, hints and tips!

The students helped me to understand what they were looking for from employers and made me think about things in a different way which is so important for me as an HR Manager. Ultimately as a mentor, you can only talk through your experiences and what has worked for you as well as offering up some suggested ways of doing something, what the individual then chooses to do with this information is down to them.

We are very pleased that Linda has been recognised by Career Ready for her long-standing commitment in her role as a business volunteer at Bexhill College. From the very beginning, she has generously given her time and expertise and has taken a lead role in positively developing the Career Ready experience for our students, making it both worthwhile and memorable for them.

All those who I have mentored have made me so proud as following their achievements after they left Bexhill College they have done just that and therefore I can absolutely say that my time spent volunteering with Career Ready has been completely worth it and a real honour and pleasure.
