Ben Parsons from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Manchester, has enjoyed being a Career Ready internship supervisor to George Summerville from Poynton High School. Here he shares his experience of working with George and why he is enthusiastic about hosting interns in the future.

I’ve worked with interns in previous roles at the BBC and Barclays, so I know how beneficial internships are in giving young people a good insight and next steps into the working world. When the ask went out I was more than happy to be involved. The Career Ready programme is the kind of opportunity I wish I had had when I was 17.

The whole experience was really positive. For his first 2 weeks, George spent time with the different teams, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Feedback from all 10 teams was exceptional. The next 2 weeks were then spent working where George wanted to work; more in line with the direction he wanted to go in.

It was also his attitude, he surprised us all with how inquisitive and attentive he was. He asked a lot of questions and noted everything down. I have to say that I thought it would be 4 weeks with a work experience student but in the end, George was completing good work for us and we extended his contract.

George’s personality has been a real highlight and he has become one of the team. For the latter part of the internship, he has done some amazing work for us and has proven he can work independently and get the job done.

This internship has been an eye-opener for many people here, a really positive experience. We have definitely felt the benefit of having a Career Ready intern and hope to continue to host them in years to come. Staff now understand that interns really can be a valuable addition to the team and have a lasting impact.
