George Summerville, from Poynton High School Manchester, enjoyed a four week paid internship at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer law firm. Here George talks about his experience and the impact it had on him.

I’d never worked in an office before so I didn’t really have any preconceptions, I was just happy to go and learn. I was initially interested because it was an IT internship and the job description looked interesting. The interview went well and I felt welcomed by the team. Knowing there would be other Career Ready students interning there also reassured me.

The first couple of weeks were spent shadowing different departments and meeting the whole team. Later on, I was involved in bigger projects and regularly met with and skyped other colleagues. The internship went so well it went from work experience at the start to me producing actual work for them in the end and having my time there extended.

For me, the highlight was visiting the other interns in the London office and them coming up to us in Manchester – it was a really nice idea and fun experience.

My presentation was also such a good feeling, to be able to present my accomplishments was a proud moment.

Since my internship, I have grown in confidence immensely and feel much more comfortable in the workplace. I know how to communicate in a professional setting and use the appropriate tools. My aim in the future is to study an IT Degree Apprenticeship and I really feel like this experience will help me directly.

Don’t think twice about getting involved with the Career Ready programme. Just do it and you won’t look back.
