James Dufty, Training & Development Manager at Lloyd’s Banking Group, is a Carer Ready mentor, LAB member and winner of the Citi Volunteer of 2017 Award for Wales, the West and the Midlands. Here, he shares his experience of mentoring and how he has been able to give young people the skills and experience to kick-start a successful future.
I am passionate about supporting young people so the opportunity to contribute to a local school and work as a mentor and Local Advisory Board member enables me to work with youngsters who are about to start their careers. I remember the influential people who helped me when I was younger and hope I can do something similar.
The support you provide as part of Career Ready is crucial for the career development of young people, but it also brings employers together with future employees and helps all parties share ideas and challenge each other.
Volunteering with Career Ready provides a different type of challenge to what people get at work, so it helps you develop your own skillset. There is also a level of satisfaction that is derived from contributing to a local school.
I hope I have been able to motivate and challenge the students I have worked with to think differently, particularly those that may have lacked self-confidence.
