Everyone is capable of achieving anything if they put their minds to it – never let anyone prevent you from being successful.
Who are you?
My name is Claire Deery and I’m a student at North West Regional College. I completed my internship at Seagate Technology PLC last summer.
How did you feel before you started the progrmme?
Before I joined the Career Ready programme I was unsure about my future. Our first event on the programme was A Capital Experience. I have always wanted to visit London and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
My highlight of the London trip was the visit to the Barclays Headquarters in Canary Wharf. The staff at Barclays gave us great advice for the future, for example, the importance of keeping in touch with people that I have met or worked with, such as, employers. I remembered this advice when I interned at Seagate and am in contact with the colleagues I met there.
What are your future plans?
I would like to go to Magee University to study Computer Science. Computer Science is relevant to the course that I am currently doing, which I have enjoyed very much. Then after completing university, I would like to work abroad, because I want to meet and work with people from different backgrounds. I would love to be employed in an IT company in the future.
What has inspired you during you time on the programme?
My mentor, Danielle, has helped me a lot throughout the programme. She always works around her busy schedule to help me with anything I need.
There were two places available at Seagate for work placements. To secure a place I had to do a presentation, which I hated doing before. But Danielle helped out a lot and she boosted my confidence by practising the presentation with me. Securing a place at Seagate is the biggest achievement of my life so far.
What did you enjoy about your internship?
My experience at Seagate will help me with university and job applications. Being at Seagate gave me a huge understanding of the world of work.
I spoke to many employees at Seagate and the advice that I was given is to work hard and aim the highest that I possibly can.
What have you learned from Career Ready?
Career Ready has opened my mind and has given me confidence to achieve my goals for the future. Without Career Ready I would have never thought that I would be capable of achieving so much in such a short space of time. I have met so many people, from students at college to the staff at Seagate.
As a result of the programme I have developed a lot of new skills such as communication, teamwork, presentation, organisation and time management. I never thought I could do some of the things I have because before I would always be very hard on myself and I would never aim high enough.
What advice do you have for other students?
Everyone is capable of achieving anything if they put their minds to it – never let anyone prevent you from being successful. Think about the positives and not the negatives, because if there are a hundred positives and one negative then our instinct is to focus on the negative and this will hold you back. It is very important to focus on the good things that are to come.
