Claire Deery from North Regional College in Belfast, who graduated from Career Ready in 2017, shares how the programme and an internship at Seagate Technology Ltd gave her the confidence and skills to get on the right career path.
Before I joined the Career Ready programme I was unsure about my future, but it has opened my mind and given me the skills and confidence to achieve my goals. Without Career Ready, I would never have thought that I would be capable of achieving so many skills in such a short space of time.
Career Ready gave me the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in a huge IT company (Seagate), and this will help me with university and job applications. Being at Seagate gave me a huge understanding of the world of work and the skills I would need to succeed.
As a result of Career Ready and my time at Seagate I have developed a lot of new skills, such as communication, teamwork, presentation, organisation and time management. I never thought I would develop so many skills, because before I would always be very negative on myself and never aim high enough. I am a lot more self-confident and a completely different person to who I was in September 2015.
The most significant influence on me during the programme was my mentor Danielle who helped me a lot throughout the programme. To secure a place at Seagate I had to do a presentation, which I usually hated doing. But Danielle helped out a lot and she boosted my confidence by practicing the presentation with me. Securing a place at Seagate is the biggest achievement of my life so far and my mentor Danielle helped me massively to achieve this.
Career Ready has really widened my horizon and ambitions. My plan for the future is to go to Magee University to study computer science and then go to work abroad- with the aim of working for an IT company.
