This award is the ultimate privilege as a teacher and very humbling

Career Ready brings the classroom to life by embedding employer engagement into the curriculum.

Who are you?

My name’s Heather Houston and I’m the Career Ready Coordinator and a Lecturer at Belfast Metropolitan College. I am the Santander Employability Champion Award in 2017.

What does your role as a Coordinator involve?

Nurturing the wellbeing and ambition of my students so that they can reach their full potential.

What are the benefits for students?

Career Ready brings the classroom to life by embedding employer engagement into the curriculum. The programme really does help prepare our students for the world of work.

What do you find personally rewarding?

Watching students deal with the challenges of life, learning to pick themselves up again and learn from every experience.

I recommend working with Career Ready because they represent best practice in collaboration, ambition, respect, excellence and they really care about students.

How do you feel to be a Santander Employability Champion?

It’s the ultimate privilege as a teacher and very humbling that I can give something back for others to learn from.

What are you future plans for the programme?

To expand both internally and externally as well as internationally through a partnership with Koning Willem College in the Netherlands.
